Bharat Ratna: Highest Civilian Award

In 1954, the Government of India introduced two prestigious civilian awards: the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan. Initially, the Padma Vibhushan was divided into three categories: Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg, and Tisra Varg. However, on January 8, 1955, a Presidential Notification announced the renaming of these categories to Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri respectively.

The Bharat Ratna is India's most prestigious civilian honor bestowed for outstanding achievements or services in any area of human activity. Unlike the Padma Awards, it holds a unique and distinct status. The Prime Minister submits the nominations for the Bharat Ratna to the President of India, although no formal nominations are mandatory. Each year, a maximum of three individuals can be awarded this honor. As of now, 53 distinguished people have been awarded the Bharat Ratna.

The award has experienced two notable suspensions throughout its history. The first suspension took place on July 13, 1977, when Morarji Desai, then sworn in as the fourth Prime Minister, decided to withdraw all personal civil honors. This decision remained in effect until January 25, 1980, when Indira Gandhi returned to power. The award faced a second suspension in mid-1992, initiated by two Public Interest Litigations filed in both the Kerala High Court and the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which sought to challenge the "constitutional validity" of the awards. Ultimately, the Supreme Court reinstated the awards in December 1995, marking the conclusion of the legal disputes surrounding them.

Padma Awards

The Padma Awards stand as one of the highest civilian honors bestowed by the Government of India, celebrating extraordinary contributions across a multitude of fields. Are you aware that these prestigious awards are categorized into three distinct levels? The Padma Vibhushan recognizes exceptional and distinguished service, while the Padma Bhushan is awarded for distinguished service of high order. Lastly, the Padma Shri acknowledges remarkable achievements in any field. 🌟
